Expanding wild slots are the only things in gambling that are better than regular wild symbols. A little tile grows into a great big wild reel, the surrounding symbols suddenly have rather more help, and an ordinary-looking spin becomes worth watching.
We've kept the old favourites that still earn their place and added newer games with walking wilds, multiplier reels and some wonderfully daft characters. Starburst is still a lovely starting point. RIP City's enormous cats are rather less restrained.
Below are 30 picks, with the important bit explained for each: what makes the wild expand, where it can appear, and whether you need to reach the free spins first. The casino links lead to casinos featured on our homepage, and there are free-demo links wherever we have the matching game in our catalogue.
How Do Expanding Wilds Work?
An expanding wild grows beyond its original position, covering more of a reel or sometimes a whole row. It then substitutes for ordinary paying symbols across those positions. Scatters and special bonus symbols usually keep their own rules.
The trigger varies enormously. A Starburst wild grows as soon as it appears on one of the middle three reels. Wanted Dead or a Wild checks whether its DuelReel expansion will make a win. RIP City's cats stretch down from their landing position, so a cat at the top has more room to grow.
Expanding, sticky and walking describe different jobs. An expanding wild gets bigger; a sticky wild stays for another spin; a walking wild changes position. Some games combine all three. We've also included a handful of full-reel wild variations and explained how they differ.
For simple expanding wilds and respins, start with Starburst or Crystal Sun. For multiplier reels, try Wanted Dead or a Wild. The final four games keep their expanding or full-wild-reel features for the bonus.
30 Best Expanding Wild Slots in 2026
#1. Starburst
Developer: NetEnt
Starburst is the ever-popular expanding wild slot with a cosmic theme. And there's a good reason to start here: the wild feature is the whole attraction, so you don't have to wait for three scatters before the interesting bit can happen.
A star on reel 2, 3 or 4 stretches over the entire reel and stays put for a respin. Another star means another expanded reel and another respin. The ten paylines pay both ways, which makes those held middle reels particularly handy. There are no separate free-spin rounds to learn, no collecting missions and no elaborate bonus menus. Just colourful gems, that lovely spacey soundtrack and the anticipation of one more star.
#2. Starburst XXXtreme
Developer: NetEnt
If you like Starburst but wish its wilds had a little more bite, XXXtreme is the obvious next stop. The familiar stars still expand on reels 2, 3 and 4, hold their positions and award respins. This time they also arrive with random multipliers.
Those multipliers run from 2x to 150x, and the Random Wilds feature can drop extra stars onto the middle reels after a spin. It gives the familiar gem game a much sharper edge. NetEnt classes this as a high-volatility version, so don't expect the original's gentler rhythm simply because the symbols look familiar. The appeal here is seeing an expanded wild and a hefty multiplier arrive together.

#3. Starburst Galaxy
Developer: NetEnt
Galaxy takes Starburst somewhere rather different. The reels start at 5x5, winning symbols disappear in avalanches, and the Feature Generator can turn the wilds already on the screen into three-symbol-high stacks. Expanding wilds have become one ingredient in a much busier game.
The Galaxy Star is a separate treat: it opens the grid to 7x7 and introduces a 3x3 Starburst Wild. Growing the board and growing a wild are two different things here. This is the one to try if you enjoy the jewel theme but want more movement between spins. Fans of the original's wonderfully simple routine may still prefer plain old Starburst.
#4. Wild Blood
Developer: Play'n GO
Wild Blood is a vampire-themed expanding wild slot where the head vampire takes centre stage. Literally: his wild on the third reel stretches from top to bottom, filling the middle of the screen with a suitably brooding count.
The expanded middle reel can remain in place through the respin feature, giving the surrounding symbols another chance to line up around him. That's the attraction of these older Play'n GO games: the special symbol is easy to spot, and you can see straight away what it has done to the reels. The gloomy castle and cast of vampires still suit the feature beautifully. Try this original before its much more crowded sequel below.
#5. Wild Blood II
Developer: Play'n GO
The vampires have acquired a much bigger castle in Wild Blood II. There are six reels and 4,096 ways to win, with the Vampire King's full-height wild providing the centrepiece. Watch the far-right reel: a full wild stack there triggers the Vampire Bat Re-spin, moving that wild to the first reel for another go.
This is a full-reel variation on the theme, so don't expect every stray piece of a vampire to stretch into a complete wild. The Bloodlust free spins add another layer, with Laura, Margaret and Rebecca offering different powers. It makes a good companion to the original if you fancy more bonus variety and a considerably busier set of reels.
#6. Crystal Sun
Developer: Play'n GO
Crystal Sun is a very easy game to warm to if you like expanding wilds and respins. Its sun symbols grow over reels 2, 3 and 4, stay in place for the respin, and can be joined by more suns to keep the sequence going. Ten paylines pay in both directions.
The extra detail is the multiplier attached to each wild: 1x, 2x or 3x. When more than one contributes to a win, their values are added. Two 3x suns therefore give 6x, rather than 9x. It's a useful little distinction to know before the reels start glowing. The planets, bright crystals and full-reel suns make this a particularly pretty alternative to Starburst.
#7. Enchanted Crystals
Developer: Play'n GO
Enchanted Crystals is a fantasy-themed expanding wild slot with sexy nymphs and crystals that grow on reels 2, 3 and 4. The leafy setting is lovely, but it's the tall blue crystal in the middle of a spin that deserves your attention.
Each expanded wild awards a respin and remains held while the other reels turn. More expanding crystals can extend the feature, so a single wild can become the start of a much more interesting screen. They substitute for ordinary paying symbols, while the Goblin King and Butterfly keep their separate jobs. The fun is watching a respin build around wilds that are already safely in position.

#8. An Evening with Holly Madison
Developer: NextGen
An Evening with Holly Madison is a gloriously fabulous expanding wild slot based on the reality TV star and her dazzling showbiz world. Holly herself is the star attraction, stretching over a reel in a sparkling dress while the rest of the symbols get on with the supporting roles.
Her expanding wilds appear on the middle three reels and substitute for the ordinary symbols, leaving the scatter to do its own work. The 25-line layout is straightforward enough to follow even when several combinations light up. It's an older game with an unapologetically glitzy look, and that is much of its charm. If space gems and gloomy crypts aren't your thing, this brings a welcome bit of Vegas glamour.
Search for An Evening with Holly Madison in the Genting Casino games lobby.
#9. Bork the Berzerker
Developer: Thunderkick
Bork the Berzerker is a Viking cartoon-based expanding wild slot starring Bork himself. He can appear on reels 2, 3 and 4, where he makes rather more of an entrance than an ordinary little WILD tile.
The fun is in the scale of it: an angry cartoon Viking taking over a reel fits the game's silly, boisterous character perfectly. Those middle-reel wilds help bridge the symbols on either side, making it easy to follow the action as the feature unfolds. There's no need for a solemn Norse mythology lesson here. Bork has plenty of personality and doesn't take himself too seriously.
Search for Bork the Berzerker in the Genting Casino games lobby.
#10. Crazy Cows
Developer: Play'n GO
Crazy Cows is the bovine-themed expanding wild slot with an expanding sticky wild on the middle reel. Fun! The bull is the one to watch: when he fills reel three, the farmyard suddenly looks a good deal more promising.
There is a specific combination behind the respins. You need that expanded bull with heart necklaces on both reels 2 and 4; the middle wild then stays in place while the other reels spin again. Knowing that stops you expecting a respin every time a single heart appears beside him. The cartoon cows and cheerfully daft presentation have aged rather nicely, and the feature is easy to follow once you know what starts it.
#11. Enchanted Meadow
Developer: Play'n GO
Enchanted Meadow is an absolutely delightful expanding wild slot with a fantastic soundtrack and half-naked wood nymphs. Its tree wild grows to fill the third reel, giving this woodland game a suitably towering centrepiece.
For the respin sequence, look for the expanded middle wild together with medallions on both neighbouring reels, 2 and 4. The tree then remains in place while the rest of the reels get another chance. A lone medallion next to the tree isn't the whole trigger. The attraction is much the same as Crazy Cows, but the atmosphere is softer and more magical. Choose whichever setting you'd rather spend time looking at.
#12. Enchanted Mermaid
Developer: Light & Wonder / legacy NextGen
Enchanted Mermaid is an underwater adventure where a sexy mermaid appears as the wild symbol. She expands when she lands on reel 2 and/or reel 4, so the action is spread across two useful positions rather than being confined to the centre.
That gives the game a slightly different shape from the middle-reel classics. Two expanded mermaids leave the first, third and fifth reels to supply the matching symbols around them. The underwater scenery is colourful without making the five-reel, 25-line layout difficult to read. The expanding character is the main attraction, with no need to study a screen full of separate meters first.
Search for Enchanted Mermaid in the Luckyme Slots games lobby.
#13. Ariana
Developer: Games Global / Microgaming
Ariana is an utterly gorgeous underwater siren-themed slot, and its expansion feature deserves a little more explanation than most. It begins with a full stack of a qualifying premium symbol on reel one. Matching symbols on later reels can then expand when that completes a win, with those expanded reels acting as wilds.
So you're watching the first reel as well as looking for a special WILD symbol. A matching symbol somewhere else on the screen is only part of the story; it still needs to make the required combination. That gives Ariana a different rhythm from Starburst's instant stretch-and-respin routine. The underwater setting remains a treat, and the expanding stacks can turn a modest-looking spin into a much fuller board.
#14. Divine Fortune
Developer: NetEnt
Divine Fortune gives its winged horse more than one trick. A Falling Wild stays on the reels and moves down with respins. If an extra wild lands over an existing one, the Wild on Wild feature turns that reel completely wild.
During free spins, the wilds expand automatically, so the bonus changes the job you're asking the horse to do. Movement and expansion work together, and the Greek setting is handsome, too. Keep an eye on the position of a wild as it descends: the excitement comes from what can land on top of it before it leaves the screen.
#15. House of Doom 2: The Crypt
Developer: Play'n GO
The Crypt has a very clear invitation for expanding-wild fans: watch the Spirit Gate. It highlights a reel, and a wild landing in that gate grows to fill it and awards a respin. The spooky setting gives the whole thing a suitably theatrical entrance.
The spirits bring different extras. Fire Mistress can add a win multiplier, Metal Priestess transforms certain symbols into knives, and Queen of the Damned opens gates across all the reels during respins. That last effect is the one that really suits this list. There are also eight free spins from three scatters, with Crypt Spins capable of combining the spirits' powers.

#16. Merlin and the Ice Queen Morgana
Developer: Play'n GO
Morgana brings a useful twist to the full-reel wild. When she lands fully stacked, she activates a random 2x, 3x, 5x or 8x multiplier on the spin's wins. Watch for the complete queen; a partial appearance isn't enough to trigger that multiplier.
The free spins also select a separate regular symbol to expand, and the full Morgana wild can substitute for it. You have a full-height multiplier wild working alongside an expanding-symbol bonus. The frozen castle is gorgeous, and the two features are worth getting to know before you play. Every symbol that fills a reel isn't doing the same job.

#17. The Wild Machine
Developer: Pragmatic Play
The Wild Machine looks like an inventor has been left unsupervised for far too long. Four contraptions surround the 5x5 reels, and they can send expanding wilds across or down the grid. It's an excellent fit if you find a single tall wild a little too restrained.
The 40-line game also has a Wonder Wheel that can award a cash prize or send you into the Gold Foundry or Diamond Forge free spins. The machinery gives the expanding feature its own visual logic: you're watching for an invention to interfere with the reels. There is plenty to follow, so the demo is particularly useful here. Give yourself a few spins to see where the different machines act.
#18. Magician's Secrets
Developer: Pragmatic Play
Magician's Secrets has 4,096 ways to win and a randomly triggered expanding-wild feature with multipliers of up to 10x. It's a busy-looking fantasy game, but the choice it offers in free spins is wonderfully relevant to this list.
Three scatters give you a choice between ten free spins with expanding wilds and eight with sticky wilds. If you've come specifically to watch wilds grow across the reels, the ten-spin option is the one that fits. The shorter option trades that behaviour for wilds that stay put. It's a useful way to compare the two features for yourself.

#19. Fat Panda
Developer: Pragmatic Play
Fat Panda puts an extra feature reel above a familiar 5x3 layout. Keep an eye on that upper strip: its wild modifiers can change what happens on the main reels, including turning a wild into an expanding one. The panda isn't just there to look pleased with himself.
There are 20 paylines, while three or more scatters start free spins with sticky wilds. Expansion and stickiness have separate roles, which is useful to know when a wild appears and doesn't immediately do everything at once. The bamboo setting and chunky symbols are easy on the eyes, with a little extra uncertainty hanging above the reels.
#20. Eastern Fury
Developer: Pragmatic Play
Eastern Fury is one of the fresher additions, released in 2026, and it gives the expanding wild a rather punchier job. An expanding wild on the fifth reel grows to full height and carries a multiplier from 2x to 100x.
If that base-game spin doesn't win, the expanded wild stays for respins, with further expanding wilds able to join it on reels four and three until a win arrives. Free spins keep expanded wilds sticky, and Super Free Spins have higher minimum multipliers. The 5x5 layout has plenty of room for the action; this is a good modern alternative to the older three-row classics.
#21. Wanted Dead or a Wild
Developer: Hacksaw Gaming
Wanted Dead or a Wild turns an expanding reel into a gunfight. A VS symbol opens into a full DuelReel when that expansion makes a winning combination, then the two outlaws face off to decide which multiplier the reel will carry.
When several DuelReels contribute to the same win, their multipliers are added before being applied. The Duel at Dawn bonus is particularly devoted to this feature, with more opportunities for multiple VS symbols to appear together. The Great Train Robbery instead centres on sticky wilds, so the bonus names really do mean different experiences. The dusty Western presentation fits brilliantly, though the 4/5 volatility rating makes this a very different proposition from Starburst.

#22. RIP City
Developer: Hacksaw Gaming
RIP City takes the old cartoon cat-and-mouse chase and gives the cat a ridiculous mouth. The Wild Cat stretches down from its landing position, potentially covering the whole reel. A cat near the top therefore has much more room to make a nuisance of itself.
If it swallows a regular wild on the way down, that symbol becomes a multiplier for the expanded cat. The Ro$$ bonus makes Wild Cats more likely, while the Maxx bonus activates reels as cats arrive, setting up further appearances on those reels. You can actually see the cat reaching for more symbols. One of the more entertaining alternatives to another giant warrior or glowing crystal.
#23. Fist of Destruction
Developer: Hacksaw Gaming
Fist of Destruction expands upwards, which is a nice change after RIP City's downward-stretching cats. A Fist symbol grows upwards from its landing position when the expansion produces a win, so a low starting position leaves more of the reel to cover.
Opposing fighters and wilds caught in its path can add multipliers to the expanding fist. The position of the symbols has a real part in the spectacle, rather than making every wild arrival look identical. The martial-arts presentation is loud and lively, and the climbing wild is easy to follow. This entry is the original Fist of Destruction; the separately listed Megamultiplier version is a different game.

#24. Miami Mayhem
Developer: Hacksaw Gaming
Miami Mayhem swaps the saloon and swords for a neon crime story. A Crew symbol that makes a winning combination expands into a full wild Crew Reel, and those reels can carry multipliers. The expansion is tied to a win, so spotting a crew member alone doesn't guarantee the whole column will change.
The mission system adds a sense of progression, improving the guaranteed multipliers as it develops. That gives the game its own identity among all these full-reel wilds. If you like the way Wanted turns characters into multiplier reels but fancy a different setting and more to follow between features, Miami is well worth a look in the demo.
#25. Densho
Developer: Hacksaw Gaming
Densho is a beautiful change of pace visually, with ink-wash scenery and Japanese warriors. Its special symbols open into full wild multiplier reels when the expanded version connects a winning line. The artwork makes that tall reel look like a scroll unfurling across the board.
There are Common, Rare and Legendary Densho symbols, each with its own multiplier range. Watching which type has landed is just as important as counting how many reels have expanded. The uncluttered colour palette helps the special symbols stand out. A calmer-looking, more distinctive setting for the multiplier-reel idea.
#26. Life and Death
Developer: Hacksaw Gaming
Life and Death gives the Four Horsemen very specific places to stand. Pestilence is linked to reel two, War to three, Famine to four and Death to five. A Horseman expands on its linked reel when doing so creates a win.
A threatening-looking character landing somewhere else doesn't automatically give you a full wild reel. The Reckoning bonus loosens the restriction once the feature has been activated, making the Horsemen more flexible. The apocalyptic artwork gives the expanding characters plenty of presence, and the different reel assignments make each arrival worth a closer look.
Expanding Wilds During Free Spins
These last four need a little patience. Their base games have other things going on, but the expanding or full-wild-reel features arrive in the bonus. In Wild North and Bear Crazy, the particular bonus you receive matters too.
#27. Jack and the Beanstalk Remastered
Developer: NetEnt
Jack's remaster keeps the fairy-tale adventure and those lovely Walking Wilds. In the base game, they move one reel to the left on each respin. The expanding part belongs to free spins, which is why Jack sits in this section of the list.
Three scatters award ten free spins, and collecting nine keys unlocks the Golden Harp upgrade. New wilds can then become full-reel harps, combining the walking feature with expansion. It's a more involved route to a tall wild than Starburst, but collecting the keys gives the bonus a proper sense of progress. Choose this one if you enjoy working through a feature.

#28. Wild North Radiant Skies GO Collect
Developer: Play'n GO
Wild North offers several animal bonuses, but expanding-wild fans should watch for Wilderness Reindeer. That feature starts with three spins and an expanding wild. The wilds then walk one reel to the left on each spin, while new reindeer expand and award respins.
The Northern Lights Wheel selects from five animal features, so Wilderness Reindeer is only one part of the game. Bear that in mind if you arrive expecting an expanding wild every time the bonus starts. The snowy scenery is gorgeous, and the moving reindeer give the feature a lovely sense of motion. It's a good companion to Jack's combination of walking and expanding wilds.

#29. Bear Crazy
Developer: Pragmatic Play
Bear Crazy hides its expanding bears inside the free spins. Three, four or five scatters award ten, fifteen or twenty spins, then you pick a honey jar to reveal the modifier. Expanding Bear is the one that fills a reel with the big fellow.
The other possibilities are a giant Mega Bear symbol or Multiplier Bears, so picking a jar isn't a guaranteed way to get the expanding version. Once the bonus is running, collecting seven pawprints adds another ten spins and more wilds. It's a cheerful, colourful addition with a little collecting game tucked into the feature.
#30. Bust the Bank
Developer: Games Global / Microgaming
Bust the Bank features full wild reels on positions one and five during its free-spin bonus, framing the other reels with two very useful columns. It is still a cracking variation on the full-reel-wild idea, even though the reels change for the bonus rather than growing from a lone wild during the base game.
The feature starts with eight free spins, and bombs can add more. With the outside reels already taken care of, your attention naturally moves to what lands in the middle. That makes the bonus very easy to read despite all the bank-robbing commotion. If you like wilds that remain useful throughout a feature, this old favourite still earns its place.
Where to Play These Expanding Wild Slots
We found the games above at these three casinos from our homepage casino list. Use the game name in the casino lobby search, as the buttons and images take you through our casino links.
Genting Casino: the broadest selection in this article, including the older Play'n GO games, Holly Madison and the six Hacksaw titles.
Pub Casino: Starburst, XXXtreme, Galaxy, Divine Fortune, The Wild Machine, Magician's Secrets, Bear Crazy and Bust the Bank.
Luckyme Slots: our current pick for Enchanted Mermaid.
A Few Things to Check Before You Spin
First, check which version you've opened. Fist of Destruction and Fist of Destruction Megamultiplier are separate games, while Bork also has a Hot 'n' Synced edition. A familiar name or picture doesn't always mean identical rules.
Next, find the expanding-wild section in the paytable. Does the wild need to complete a win? Does it expand from any position, or only on certain reels? Does a new wild award another respin? Those three questions explain far more about the feature than the artwork does.
Finally, look at how multipliers combine. Crystal Sun and Wanted add relevant wild multipliers together; you shouldn't multiply their displayed values by one another. More wilds can improve a particular combination, but they don't guarantee a win on every spin.
The demo links are a handy way to get familiar with the layout before staking money. They may ask you to verify your age, and game availability can change. Set your budget before you start, and treat a bonus as something that might happen rather than something you're owed.
