About Big Time Gaming
You've probably seen "Megaways" written across plenty of slots. Big Time Gaming is where that name comes from.
And if changing reels are what you like, there's plenty here to dig into. Bonanza can keep a spin going through Reactions, White Rabbit makes the reels taller during its free spins and Star Clusters does away with the familiar six-reel setup completely. The screen starts as a 4x4 grid and can split into dozens of smaller positions.
That's the side of BTG I'm interested in here: what happens after you press spin and the first set of symbols appears.
BTG has been around since 2011, starting out in Australia. Bonanza arrived five years later and became one of the games closely associated with Megaways.
Evolution bought the studio in 2021. BTG kept its own name, though, which is why you'll still see Big Time Gaming written beside the games in casino lobbies.
BTG doesn't use Megaways in everything. The free demos include changing reels, fixed ways and a splitting cluster grid, so you can compare the ideas before choosing a game.
Megaways Doesn’t Always Mean a BTG Game
There's a small catch with the Megaways name: plenty of other developers use it too.
BTG created the mechanic and licenses it to other studios. Red Tiger's Gonzo's Quest Megaways is one example.
In a Megaways game, the number of symbols showing on the reels can change from one spin to the next. As the reel heights change, so does the number of possible ways to win.
But if it's Big Time Gaming you came looking for, "Megaways" alone won't narrow things down very far. Look for BTG or Big Time Gaming beside the game name.
Megaways and Reactions Do Different Jobs
Megaways decides how many symbol positions appear on each reel. With six reels showing seven symbols each, multiplying those reel heights gives 117,649 possible ways. A spin with shorter reels has fewer. That figure counts possible combinations; it is not 117,649 separate spins or a measure of your chance of winning.
Reactions happen after a win. Winning symbols are removed, replacements arrive and the game checks the new arrangement. BTG combines the two in Bonanza, but they are separate ideas: changing reel heights set up the screen, while Reactions can continue a winning spin.
Nor does every BTG slot need either system. Danger High Voltage keeps 4,096 ways on a fixed layout. Star Clusters groups matching symbols on a grid. Once you separate those formats, the catalogue becomes easier to choose from than a list of similar-sounding 'Mega' names.
Big Time Gaming Slots to Try
Bonanza
Game Information
Bonanza has six changing reels with up to 117,649 ways, plus a horizontal reel above the middle four. Winning symbols disappear in Reactions; replacements arrive and can create another win from the same paid spin.
Four GOLD scatters trigger 12 free spins. For me, the Reactions are the attraction: the first set of symbols stopping isn't necessarily the end of the spin.
Extra Chilli
Game Information
Extra Chilli moves the extra horizontal reel underneath the main reels. It keeps the Megaways and Reactions combination, with H.O.T. letters triggering eight free spins and consecutive bonus wins increasing the multiplier.
The market setting is different from Bonanza's mine, but the position of that extra reel and the free-spins feature matter more than the new scenery.
White Rabbit Megaways
Game Information
White Rabbit starts with up to 16,807 ways. During free spins, cake symbols add two positions to the reel where they land, eventually allowing up to 248,832 ways.
The expansion is easy to see because the reels themselves grow. If changing reel heights are the part of Megaways you enjoy, that is a more substantial change than another set of symbols.
Danger High Voltage
Game Information
Danger High Voltage leaves Megaways behind for six reels, four rows and 4,096 fixed ways. The Electric Six theme carries into the Fire and Electricity Wilds.
Three My Desire scatters bring a choice: High Voltage starts with 15 spins and can add full-reel multiplier wilds; Gates of Hell starts with seven and selects a symbol that can become a sticky wild. I'd choose by the feature, not just the starting spin count.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Megaways
Game Information
The Hot Seat is here; the quiz questions aren't. This is a Megaways slot with Dual Reactions, up to 117,649 ways and a growing free-spins multiplier.
Its game-show presentation fits the bonus much better than a round of general knowledge would. Knowing who painted the Mona Lisa doesn't change a slot result.
Star Clusters Megaclusters
Game Information
Star Clusters starts with a 4x4 grid and pays for at least five matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically. Large winning symbols split into four smaller ones; small winning symbols disappear and are replaced.
The base grid can hold 64 small symbols. Free spins start at 8x8 and can reach 256 small positions. Megaclusters makes room by splitting symbols, not by changing the height of a set of reels.
Megapays: The Jackpot Editions
Megapays means a progressive jackpot, not another way of arranging the reels. Bonanza Megapays keeps the changing reels and cascading wins, then adds a separate jackpot feature with four prize tiers.
The original Bonanza doesn't acquire that progressive simply because the characters look the same. The full title distinguishes the jackpot edition, just as Star Clusters Megapays is separate from Star Clusters Megaclusters.
A progressive pot grows through contributions from bets and resets when won. That is different from the fixed maximum win of the underlying slot, which is normally expressed as a multiple of the stake.
BTG on Phones and Tablets
BTG's games use HTML5 and support mobile and desktop browsers. You can open them through a casino's mobile website without installing a separate BTG game. The range includes mobile versions of Bonanza, White Rabbit and the tap-and-reveal TapCards games.
Some editions also change the presentation. Bonanza Megapays added full-screen portrait play as part of its remaster.
RTP and the Game You Open
BTG doesn't have one RTP across its range. Its published figures include 96% for Bonanza and 95.67% for Danger High Voltage. These describe particular game versions; the rules inside the game you open are the place to confirm its return.
RTP is a theoretical average over a very large number of stakes, not a session forecast.
Beyond the Reels: BTG’s TapCards Games
BTG's TapCards games use cards that you tap to reveal symbols. Depending on the card, you'll uncover between seven and 16 of them.
Get three, four or five matching symbols and you can receive an award. Their position on the card doesn't matter, and wilds can stand in for other symbols.
Bonanza has a TapCards version too. Here you're opening a card and revealing matching symbols, so don't expect the changing reels and Reactions from the slot.
BTG has also used TapCards for Millionaire, Extra Chilli and Big Bucks Deluxe.
The range includes Mini, Midi and Maxi Tap Pots too. It's a separate instant-win format, even when the name on the game is one you recognise from the slots.
Finding Big Time Gaming Casinos in the UK
BTG is worth a look if you enjoy games that change after the first symbols land. Bonanza's Reactions, White Rabbit's growing reels and Star Clusters' splitting grid offer quite different versions of that idea.
Try the free demos or compare our recommended UK Big Time Gaming casinos for current offers, payment options and withdrawal terms. Look for BTG in the provider details when searching a casino's Megaways category, since it will also contain games from other studios.
FAQ
Are all Megaways slots made by Big Time Gaming?
No. Big Time Gaming came up with Megaways, then licensed it to other studios. That's how you end up with games such as Gonzo's Quest Megaways from Red Tiger. Look for BTG or Big Time Gaming in the developer details if you want its own games.
Can I play Big Time Gaming slots for free?
Yes. The available BTG demos use virtual credits, with no cash winnings to withdraw. They're useful for seeing how the changing reels and bonus features work.
Does Big Time Gaming make jackpot slots?
Yes. Its Megapays editions add progressive jackpots to selected games. Bonanza Megapays, for example, has a separate jackpot feature that the original Bonanza doesn't include. Megaways describes the changing reels; it doesn't mean a game has a jackpot.
Can I play BTG games on my phone?
Yes. BTG's games support mobile and desktop browsers. You can open an available game through your casino's mobile website without downloading a separate app for each slot. Bonanza and Bonanza Megapays both have mobile versions.
Does Big Time Gaming make anything other than slots?
Yes. TapCards are one example. Bonanza TapCards uses a tap-and-reveal format where matching symbols can produce an award regardless of where they appear on the card. BTG has also used the format for Millionaire, Extra Chilli and Big Bucks Deluxe.
